Reminder of Why They Matter

Now that we are embarking on new generations galore, your elder Gen Z representative is here to explain the lore and history of why the University of Florida is so heavily documented despite not having much to talk about since Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow, Aaron Hernandez, and the rest of the Swamp Kings were running over Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The Florida Gators have played football since the school was established in 1906. They weren’t called the “Gators” until 1911, but they’ve lived up to the name — hunting in isolation, succeeding in bursts. In the wild, gators have about a 30% success rate when they hunt in the Everglades. The University of Florida has hit a similar mark with three national titles led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks:

  • Steve Spurrier (1966)

  • Danny Wuerffel (1996)

  • Tim Tebow (2007)

Spurrier never brought a title home as a player, but he led Wuerffel and company to the program’s first national championship as a coach. Ten years later, Urban Meyer — fresh from Utah — turned Tebow into the SEC’s ultimate weapon and beat his beloved Buckeyes in the 2006 BCS Championship.

Two years later, Meyer, Tebow, and a loaded roster with Percy Harvin, Aaron Hernandez, and Brandon Spikes beat Sam Bradford and Oklahoma for another title. But the run ended quickly. Meyer resigned in 2010, and Florida entered a carousel of Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, and Dan Mullen — none able to restore Gator dominance.

The Tenure of Billy Napier

Since 2022, Billy Napier has been in a pressure cooker. The former Louisiana head coach brought a Nick Saban coaching tree pedigree but entered 2024 with reports that boosters had already raised the $27 million needed for his buyout.

Episode 2 of Any Given Saturday dives into Napier’s situation and the looming quarterback battle between 6th-year senior Graham Mertz and true freshman DJ Lagway.

How Do You Choose Between Experience and Potential?

Quarterbacks in Florida are treated like presidential candidates and voted out just as fast if they don’t win. Mertz came from Wisconsin with good-but-not-great numbers (5,405 yards, 38 TDs, 26 INTs in 34 games). Lagway? A 5-star dual-threat with SEC-ready size, a cannon arm, and Cam Newton-like running ability.

It’s a classic NFL storyline in Gainesville: an experienced bridge QB vs. the rookie with all the upside.

Death Roll Early in the Season

Florida opened with in-state rival Miami in what experts called the most demanding schedule in the nation. Mertz started but was knocked out with a concussion, forcing Lagway into a marquee battle against future No. 1 pick Cam Ward. The Gators lost, and Napier’s seat went from warm to scorching.

Going Through Changes

Napier gave Lagway the Week 2 start against Samford, and the freshman lit it up in a 42–7 win. But the head coach still wouldn’t commit to a full-time starter. Ignoring John Madden’s famous “If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have one”, Napier tried to juggle both — and got punished for it.

Texas A&M, under new head coach Mike Elko, blew Florida out, and the buyout movement gained momentum.

People Just Like You and Me

Like Episode 1 humanized Shane Beamer, this one gives a raw look at Napier. Surrounded by memorabilia in his office, he shares his father’s battle with ALS and the family mantra: “No Complaining. Make a Difference.”

The moment makes you step back and see the human behind the headset — even if the fans on message boards never will.

Not Your Choice Anymore

Against Tennessee, Mertz went down with a non-contact knee injury, ending his season and career. Lagway entered trailing by 17, tied the game with his arm and legs, and forced overtime. The Gators lost, but the tone of the season shifted: this was Lagway’s team now.

Sunshine on the Horizon?

Lagway grew through the year, mistakes and all, and Florida ended with a Gasparilla Bowl win over Tulane. Mertz never disappeared, instead becoming Lagway’s sideline mentor.

For the first time in years, Florida heads into a season with not just hype, but a legitimate shot at the playoffs.
